Why Assemblage Moved to Medium

Assemblage originally began as an alternative to publishing on Medium. We wanted to host a group of creative stalwarts off-site to see if we could build something unique together that showcased our writing outside of that arena. In some ways, it worked very well. But in others, it didn’t. The time and effort to scale up a site with no verified following was much harder without the backing of a site like Medium. So, we pivoted.

We moved our publication onto Medium and have taken off. All of our original writers came with us from Medium anyway, and most, if not all of them, were still there waiting for us when we got back. But just because we are publishing the majority of our stories on Medium does not mean that this site is destined to become a graveyard of lost narratives. Quite the contrary.

We are in the process now of adding our Medium writers to this site. Creating their profiles, adding links back, and giving a little more insight into who they are as a person and a creative. We are prepping for season two of our podcast which will feature many of our writers. And we are going to be bringing Book Club back, starting in the new year.

This site will serve as a complement to our Medium publication and will develop more over time. We are tossing around ideas about special content for the stand-alone site, but one thing is certain - there will not be duplicates. We will not reproduce content between the publications. That’s not how we do things.

Assemblage is defined as:

  • a collection or gathering of things or people

  • a machine or object made of pieces fitted together

  • a work of art made by grouping found or unrelated objects

This is us. This is Assemblage.

We are what we will become. And that can change every day. But our commitment to finding and publishing the best writers and their stories and poetry will never change. We are creatives working together to build something unique.
